Job Summary

The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will be involved in a grant-funded research project that involves optical bio-signal processing. The PDF is responsible for technical advancements of an optical monitoring technology based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), developing novel tissue hemodynamics parameters.

Organizational Status

The PDF will be recruited by the UBC Department of Orthopaedics under supervision of Dr. Babak Shadgan, Assistant professor and Director of the Implantable Biosensing Laboratory. The PDF will be based at ICORD (www.icord.org) with work being performed periodically at selected labs at UBC Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The PDF will work within a team comprised of researchers, technicians and students in the lab as well as other internal labs and our partners in Canada.

Work Performed

The PDF will undertake and support all research activities related to the development and application of optical signal processing, based on near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

Responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Follows and implements the project technical work plan, goals, objectives, milestones, and timelines, and communicates these to the various project teams and partners as appropriate under supervision of the supervisor.
  • Engages in necessary technical developments and system operations and in collaboration with technical collaborators.
  • Works with engineering, clinical and scientific teams to develop NIRS parameters.
  • Liaises with various technical and research collaborators, partners, departments and institutions as necessary.
  • Participates in technical meetings and others involved with technical and scientific aspects of the project.
  • Coordinates and develops grant applications.
  • Contribute to the preparation and writing of reports and scientific manuscripts.
  • Prepares and delivers presentations for research meetings.
  • Performs other duties from time to time as necessary.

Supervision Received

Works under general direction within established policies, procedures and standards. Work reviewed against task objectives and conformity to standards.

  • Reports to the Supervisor, Dr. Shadgan.

Supervision Given

May assign and check the work of staff and students in the lab.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSc or MSc in electrical engineering.
  • PhD in electronics, optics, biosensors, biophysics or biomedical engineering with expertise in signal processing.

SKILLS AND WORK EXPERIENCE PREFERENCES

  • Background and expertise in bio-signal processing.
  • Expert in MATLAB and C++, and traditional object-oriented languages (e.g., Java, .Net, Ruby, Python).
  • Good ability in writing structured code, scripting, running unit tests and debugging.
  • High level ability to effectively use statistical software.
  • Having publications in reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals and/or patents.
  • Ability to communicate scientific knowledge between disciplines and industries.
  • Ability to work effectively, independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to interact productively and professionally with a wide range of collaborators.
  • Strong organizational, time management and project management skills.

Nice to Have:

  • Background, engineering knowledge and experience of NIRS.
